Port of Townsville

Port of Townsville’s expansion project is a step closer to realisation with a detailed business case for the channel capacity upgrade prepared for consideration by the Queensland government.

The business case outlines the benefits of widening the existing navigational channels, which aims to ensure trade grows while maximising the existing port infrastructure.

The Port’s shipping channel is to be widened from 92m at its narrowest point to 180m, allowing ships longer tan 300m access the port.

The channel capacity upgrade is Stage 1 of the $1.64bn Townsville Port Expansion Project, which, over two more stages, aims to add up to five berths to the port and add a swing basin in the Outer Harbour, and deepen the channel further.

Port of Townsville expects works to begin on the $520m channel upgrade this year, and completion is expected in 2022.
